Community Event: Self-Care in Deep Winter
NatureWell facilitator Mia will host an afternoon at Treborth Botanic Garden to explore what nature teaches us about self-care in the darkest part of the year. Together, we’ll reflect on how we can support ourselves in a compassionate and nurturing way after the intensity of Christmas and New Years.
This will be a companionable afternoon with other nature-loving, like-hearted people. We’ll spend the afternoon outdoors, walking or sitting under an outdoor shelter. If the weather permits, we’ll gather around the firepit. Dress warmly!
A Guided by Nature Community Event
Community Events are our way of giving back to our local community and caring for our environment. We give our time freely and request that you make a small charitable donation to North Wales Wildlife Trust, registered charity number 230772. Your donation will be passed on in full, minus card processing fees of about 28p per £5 donation. You can still attend a Community Event if you can’t make a donation; please let us know by email before you book.
Your team for the day
Mia is a qualified Mountain Leader, NatureWell Facilitator, Eryri Ambassador, and holder of the Rescue Emergency Care (REC) Outdoor First Aid certificate. Her background is in delivering training to corporate, government and charitable bodies.
What to expect on the day
The afternoon will be spent wandering the grounds of Treborth Botanic Garden and connecting with nature. We’ll spend time sharing as a group and we’ll have solo time for reflection. If the weather is dry we’ll gather round the fire, and if it’s wet we’ll sit under the outdoor shelter. It may be cold, so please read the kit list below.
This event is suitable for people with limited mobility. Please note, however, that the toilet at Treborth Botanic Garden has limited accessibility features.
This event will involve mindfulness-based nature connection activities. We will spend time in nature areas that are open to the public, which may include dog walkers with dogs off their leads.
What to bring
The weather in North Wales can be quite variable. For your comfort and safety, we ask you to bring the following items.
- Boots or sturdy walking shoes, ideally waterproof and with ankle support
- Warm clothing
- Waterproof jacket and trousers (essential even if the forecast is good)
- Spare warm layers and/or jacket; it may be very cold when we’re sitting
- Hat and gloves
- Rucksack with a waterproof liner (bin liner will do)
- Any medication that you require
- A thermos with a hot drink
- Water and snacks
- Head torch (or other torch)
Venue
Treborth Botanic Garden, Bangor, Gwynedd, LL57 2RX
Treborth Botanic Garden is situated on the Gwynedd bank of the Menai Straits, between the Menai Bridge and the Britannia Bridge. It can be accessed by car and public transport from the Menai Bridge end (near the Antelope Pub). Bus numbers X4, 4A, 57 and 62 run from Bangor Rail Station and Bangor Bus Station to the Antelope Pub. There is ample parking, but please park considerately and do not block the disabled bays directly by the building. You can find directions here.
Much of the outside garden is accessible for wheelchair users when the grass is dry, and the path through the woodland is suitable for wheelchairs. The toilet is not fully equipped with aids for disabled users, but it has a hand rail and is large enough for a carer to help a disabled person.
Photos and feedback
We’d like your permission to use your photos and feedback on the day for marketing purposes, including on social media. It’s easy to refuse either while booking or on the day.
Cancellations and refunds
We’re unable to refund the charitable donations associated with our Community Events – please consider them a gift to our chosen local environmental charity. If you’re unable to attend, you may transfer your ticket to a friend. If you’d like to do this, please email us their name, email address and mobile number.
